Former Kandy's swimming champion Gowri Rajan becomes the first woman to become the Rotary District Governor. Gowri had her education at Good Shepherped's Convent Kandy, where she excelled in Swimming and Hockey. From their she crossed over to Echole International school and there too she did well in swimming and hockey.
As a undergraduate she did swimming, hockey and played Lawn Tennis for University of Bangalore and later for the Peradeniya University.
She has made Kandy and Sri Lanka proud by being the first woman to hold this post, and also she was the youngest and first lady president to take over the presidency of Kandy Rotary club. During that time she gave a big hand for sports promotion, which is continued even today. It was during her time that they conducted a All Island "Rotary and Rotract" T 20 cricket tournament which is one of the most popular sporting events among the Rotarians and Rotaract members.
This time she is all out to make the T 20 cricket tournament more colorful and also expecting to invite teams from Indian and Malaysian Rotary and Rotaract clubs. Gowrie is the eldest daughter of sports promoter late T.R.R. Rajan. He is the one who came in as the first sponsors of the Kandy Sports Club rigger team in 1992 the year they won the first trophy. Now Gowri, with her mother Jeewa the two sisters Ahalaya and Ashwin and her uncle B.D.R "Suri" Rajan give a big hand in sports promotion, through their Sun and Asoka Group of companies.
